What’s the case in Holland?

As Dropping the Baggage, is being implemented, partners want to learn more about the current situation across Europe. But what’s going on in Holland? How many students are leaving school? Which are the reasons?

The Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science reports the following:

  • The number of young people leaving education without a basic qualification has risen to 24,385 in the 2020-2021 school year. This is 1,619 more than last year.
  • Young people leave school too early for various reasons.
  • The first factor is that some crisis measures in the 2019-2020 school year may have an effect in the past school year.
  • The second factor for dropping out may be that the crisis has shown an increase in the number of young people who have made the wrong study choice.
  • The third factor is probably an increase in mental problems in students.
  • Fourthly, the labour market can play a role.

Often it is a combination of causes that contribute to school drop-out, such as

  • a wrong choice of study,
  • preferring to earn money than being in school,
  • personal or mental problems or
  • different expectations about the education between school and the pupil or student
