VET educators play a crucial role in fostering a We-approach among students through the way they handle students’ behaviours and signals. With some simple steps educators can create an inclusive and supportive learning environment where all students feel valued and respected.

Establish Clear Expectations: As a teacher you should clearly communicate your expectations regarding behaviour and participation in the classroom. By setting clear guidelines and standards, students understand the boundaries and the type of behavior that is expected from them and it promotes a sense of shared responsibility and helps create a positive classroom culture.

Promote Positive Reinforcement: Recognizing and reinforcing positive behaviors is an effective way to encourage a We-approach.  You can choose if you provide verbal praise, rewards, or certificates to acknowledge and celebrate students’ positive contributions, teamwork, and cooperation. This helps create a supportive atmosphere where students feel motivated to support and uplift their peers.

Encourage Open Communication: Creating an environment that encourages open communication helps foster a We-approach. Establish regular opportunities for students to express their thoughts, concerns, and ideas. Active listening and respectful dialogue can help address any issues or conflicts that arise early on while it allows students to develop problem-solving skills and build stronger relationships with their peers.

Implement Collaborative Learning Activities: Engaging students in collaborative learning activities promotes teamwork and cooperation. You can (together with your colleagues) design group projects, discussions, and problem-solving tasks that require teamwork. This not only enhances their vocational skills but also encourages mutual support and shared responsibility.

Address Negative Experiences and Baggage: Some students may carry negative experiences or baggage that can impact their engagement and well-being in the classroom. Be sensitive to these experiences and provide a safe and supportive space for students to share their feelings and concerns. Individualized support, counseling services, or referral to appropriate resources can help students overcome these challenges.

Cultivate a Culture of Respect: Foster a culture of respect where all students’ voices are heard and valued. This involves promoting inclusivity, empathy, and understanding among students. You can facilitate discussions on diversity, cultural awareness, and acceptance to encourage students to appreciate and respect each other’s differences.

Professional Development and Continuous Learning: Continuously enhance your knowledge and skills in behavior management and communication techniques. Participating in professional development opportunities, attending workshops, and seeking guidance from experienced educators can help you stay updated with effective strategies and approaches to foster a We-approach in the classroom.
